Spring is the time to remove garlic mustard, and we concentrate our efforts before the flowers open since the plants can be pulled and dropped. (After the flowers open, the plants must be bagged and removed so they don’t set seed.)
2025 will mark HGCNY’s 8th year removing garlic mustard from one area of the forest at Baltimore Woods. It may seem like an unending project because the seed remains viable in the soil for up to ten years, but we’ve made progress. In 2022 we spent 30-35 hours in that area, in 2022 18.5 hours and last year 12.5 hours. [We’ve also expanded into other areas.]
