Searching for Spring Songbirds at Baltimore Woods

Description: Mid-May is the peak time to observe migrating spring songbirds here at Baltimore Woods. These beautiful little birds often travel on long journeys spanning continents to reach their nesting grounds. In this program, we will search for returning songbirds and learn more about where they go and the habitats that they need throughout their migration. We will also discuss ways that you can help these tiny travelers.
More Details: Depending on bird activity, we may follow the difficult Boundary Trail to Phillipsโ Pond or on the more moderate Arboretum Trail and surrounding areas. Trail surfaces may include grass, loose soil and gravel, exposed roots, and steps. Please call ahead if you have mobility needs. This program is designed for adults.

The Hinchcliff Family Preserve lies at the end of Covey Road off Route 41 in Spafford, Onondaga County. From Skaneateles, take Route 41 south for 14 miles, then turn right onto Covey Road. The preserveโs parking lot lies at the end of the road. From Ithaca or Cortland, take Route 13 north to Route 281 north, then take a left onto Route 41 north in Homer. Description: Interested in learning a new hobby enjoyed around the planet by millions of people? Join Jason Gorman, FLLTโs Nature Preserve Manager, to learn the basics of birding. Warbler Walk with Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps

Description: Join the Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps for a guided one-mile bird walk along the West Shore Trail to explore newly restored habitats that attract dozens of migratory warblers and other songbirds during the spring migration. Participants will learn from habitat experts from National Audubon Society staff and volunteers about birds, other wildlife and the importance of forests and wetlands in supporting the Onondaga Lake watershed. The walk will be easy to moderate along a paved trail with a gentle slope. Limited binoculars and field guides will be available.

Rick Bunting is Professor Emeritus from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam where he served as Chair of Music Education and conductor of the renowned Crane Chorus. Previous to his work at Potsdam he taught at the Bainbridge- Guilford Central School, SUNY Fredonia and Jacksonville University. Since his retirement from teaching, he has devoted a great deal of time to his passion as an amateur naturalist. He enjoys taking pictures of what he sees and sharing them on a regular basis with many friends and in the programs he creates.

Spring Wildflower Walk at Cornell Botanical Gardens

Description: Join this tour to discover spring blooms in the Mundy Wildflower Garden!
Tour the woodland pathways and plant habitats of the Mundy Wildflower Garden, a 25-acre natural area and naturalistic garden. This garden is an ideal place to learn about the geology and natural history of this area and to see native woodland plants emerging in spring.
Please note: this walk will meet at the Nevin Welcome Center and includes 70 moderately steep stairs down into the Mundy garden. It will be held rain or shine and but may be cancelled in the event of severe or hazardous weather. Please come prepared for the weather and wear sturdy footwear.

Warbler Migration and Walk at Montezuma Audubon Centerย

Description: The Warblers are beginning to reach their summer resting habitat here at the Montezuma Wetlands Complex! Join a Montezuma Audubon Center educator for a brief presentation on warbler migration this time of year and a snapshot of all the different species that call the Complex home for the summer. Common Yellowthroat Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, and Cerulean Warbler are just a few we will highlight and hope to see!
With our new warbler knowledge, we will head out for a 1-mile leisure birding walk on our forest and grassland trails. The trail is primarily flat, but there may be some uneven footing and mud. Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes, and don’t forget to bring your camera!
We will provide binoculars and field guides for the duration of the program.

Natives for Container Gardening with Jeremie Fant by the Native Plant Society of New Jersey

Description: Itโs New Jersey, the most densely populated state in the USA. Many of us ask can we support pollinators and birds on our balconies and our tiny, on average, ยผ acre yards. Well Jeremy Fant lives in Chicago, with only a 5 X 10โ balcony for gardening. For the past 15 years he has learned by trial and error what containers work best, the plant partnerships that are successful, even flourishing year to year. By setting out to create a thriving native plant container garden he has discovered what works and will share the container materials, soils, plants and more that grow successfully on his balcony.
Bio: Jeremie Fant is Director of Conservation at Negaunee Institute of the Chicago Botanic Garden. Originally from Australia, Jeremie received his Degree in Horticulture from the University of Adelaide and then went on to get his Doctorate in Genetics at the University of Cambridge in the UK. Jeremie will educate us on successfully planting pollinator friendly perennials for small spaces!

Description: Join Andrew Ferguson, a science educator from Trumansburg, for a guided nature walk at the Stevenson Forest Preserve. Andrew will lead us on a walk in search of birds and amphibians and will the discuss the native plants we see encounter along the way. The walk will last approximately 1.5-2 hours. Woods Walk at Bear Swamp State Forest with Finger Lakes Land Trust

Parking will be at the Harnett Road parking area just off of Route 41A near the sign for the Colonial Lodge. For navigation devices, enter 2630 State Route 41A, Moravia, NY.
- From the south, take Route 41A north about 11.25 miles from the junction with Route 41.
- From the north, take Route 41A in Skaneateles south for approximately 17 miles.
Description: Come join us for an afternoon visit to Bear Swamp State Forest. Finger Lakes Land Trust and NYS DEC Forestry staff will lead a hike on the red trail network to observe and discuss land use history, forest wetlands, recreation on state forest, and an explanation of forest management activities and current forest health concerns.
We will meet in the parking lot at 1:00PM for introductions and a brief discussion. The hike is about 2 miles and generally flat, with a slight climb towards the end. There are muddy sections so hiking boots and pants are recommended. It is a wet area, so blackflies and mosquitoes are to be expected. Please come prepared with bug spray and/or headnets.

Tree “Buds” Weekly Tree Phenology Walks at Cayuga Nature Center

Where: Cayuga Nature Center, 1420 Taughannock Blvd., Ithaca, NY 14850
Description: Be our tree “buds” and join our weekly citizen science walk to observe and collect data on seasonal changes in trees.
Rain or shine, we will monitor when buds break, leaves emerge, flowers bloom, fruits ripen, and when leaves change color and fall. We send the data to the USA National Phenology Network, which makes it available to researchers who are trying to understand the mechanisms behind seasonal changes and how they are influenced by a changing climate.
Youโll learn how to make these types of observations, and how to do this at home or in your neighborhood.
This event is free and everyone is welcome to attend. We’ll meet in front of the Cayuga Nature Center lodge at the beginning of the program.

From birds and flowers to insects and ferns, each excursion is sure to reveal something new to appreciate along our beautiful trails.
This program will occur weekly.
Pre-registration is not required.
More Details: This program is designed to be adaptable for accessibility needs. Our trails range in difficulty from wheel-chair accessible crushed stone paths to very difficult steep trails with loose soil, exposed roots, and steps. Guided Nature Walk at Rice Creek Field Station
When: 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, May 9, 16, 23, & 30, 2026
Where: Rice Creek Field Station, 193 Thompson Road, Oswego, NY 13126
Description: Rice Creek’s naturalists will be your guides as you explore the forests, fields, wetlands, and waterways of Rice Creek Field Station, a 350-acre wildlife preserve dedicated to supporting research and education.
These free walks are open to the general public and suitable for all ages. Walks are 1 mile or less over gentle to moderate terrain on one of Rice Creek’s four trails, and approximately 1 hour in length. Adult- and youth-sized snowshoes (for ages 3+) are available in winter, trail conditions permitting. If snow is insufficient, we will go on a boot walk. Sturdy snow- or hiking boots should be worn in winter regardless.
During the walk, a naturalist will discuss the cultural and ecological history of Rice Creek from its early days as working farmland to today. Additionally, the naturalist will identify and interpret discoveries such as animal sightings, plant blooms, seasonal changes, and more. Participants are encouraged to keep their eyes open for discoveries and ask questions along the way. Photography, journaling, and sketching are all welcome activities during the walk.
Participants should come dressed for the weather and tick prevention. Boots are advisable as trails may be muddy, especially during late fall, winter, and spring.
